Chris Browne has lived permanently
on Alonnisos
since 1996, first
building a house
there in 1990.
He has spent
more than ten
years guiding
walks and boat trips around
Alonnisos and the
surrounding islands of the marine park,
helping to open up the traditional
footpaths which later became the marked
hiking trails that now criss-cross the island.
Chris founded the Alonnisos Walking Club in 2005 with the aim of encouraging both residents and visitors alike to better appreciate and enjoy this outstanding island environment. He is the author of the walking guide Alonnisos through the souls of your feet. Before settling on Alonnisos, Chris worked for many years in the Middle East and Africa and has trekked in South America twice to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust of the UK.
He has also explored the Western Ghats mountain range of southern India on foot and studied yoga there.
When not walking, in the evenings, Chris can very often be found in one of the local tavernas or public spaces entertaining visitors and locals as part of the popular local rock and roll band, the Aloni Band, or as half of the ‘Barefoot Blues’ duo. He is also an active member of the newly formed island drama group, the Greek Island Thespians (GITs).
Chris’ wife Julia is the founder of the
Alonnisos Society for Animal Protection
(ASAP), the aim of which is the promotion
of respect for pets, stray animals, natural environment
and the raising of
public awareness with
respect to their care;
she is also the author
of An Insider’s Guide
to Alonnisos.
